EDDM vs. Saturation Mailing: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Mark Hale ‐ February 17, 2026
If you’re looking for an affordable way to reach a large local audience, chances are you’ve come across Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM). On the surface, it sounds almost too good to be true: postage as low as $0.247 per postcard and the ability to mail to every home in a neighborhood.
And for some businesses, it is a great option.
But EDDM isn’t the only way to blanket a geographic area, and it’s not always the most efficient or cost-effective solution, especially once volume and labor are factored in. That’s where saturation mailing comes into play.
Let’s break down what each option is, how they’re similar, and the key differences that can help you decide which is better for your business.
What Is Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM)?
EDDM is a mailing program offered by the United States Postal Service that allows businesses to mail postcards to every address on a specific carrier route without needing names or individual addresses.
The USPS offers discounted postage because:
- The mail is not personalized
- You’re mailing to every door on a route
- You (or your printer) do much of the preparation work
EDDM is postcard-only and requires larger sizes, typically 6.5” x 11” up to 8.5” x 11”. That larger format helps your piece stand out, but it also costs more to print.
EDDM is especially appealing if:
- You’re just starting your business
- You need quick exposure in a local area
- You want a simple, low-barrier way to get your name out there
For new businesses, EDDM can be a fast and affordable way to introduce yourself to an entire neighborhood.
The Hidden Work Behind EDDM
Where many businesses get surprised is in the labor and logistics required to run an EDDM campaign, especially at scale.
EDDM requires:
- Bundling postcards into stacks of 50, done by hand
- Labeling each bundle with carrier route information
- Supplying exact quantities per route
- Delivering bundles directly to the local post office that serves each route
If you’re mailing small quantities, this may not be a big issue. But if you’re mailing thousands or tens of thousands of postcards, the handwork, drop-shipping, and coordination can quickly add time, labor, and cost.
While it is possible to use a bulk mail house for EDDM, it’s often not ideal due to how manual and decentralized the process is.
What Is Saturation Mailing?
Saturation mailing works very similarly to EDDM in that it allows you to blanket a geographic area without needing a traditional mailing list.
The key difference is how the mail is processed.
With saturation mailing:
- Mail is entered through a bulk mail system
- Preparation is automated, not hand-bundled
- Large volumes are handled far more efficiently
- Costs are often lower at scale
Saturation mailing is essentially a more streamlined, mail-house-friendly alternative to EDDM, especially for ongoing or high-volume campaigns.
Key Differences That Matter
While EDDM and saturation mailing look similar on paper, the differences can have a big impact on cost, flexibility, and efficiency.
EDDM
- USPS program
- Manual bundling and local drop-offs
- Best for small, local, starter campaigns
- Limited flexibility
Saturation Mailing
- Bulk mail program
- Automated processing
- Lower labor costs at scale
- Ideal for repeat or large-volume mailings
Another major advantage of saturation mailing is target control.
For example, if you don’t want to mail to apartments or condos, saturation mailing makes that easy. You can choose to mail only single-family homes, something EDDM does not allow, since it goes to every address on a carrier route.
Which Businesses Benefit Most?
Both options can work well for businesses with broad appeal, such as:
- Restaurants and pizza shops
- Grocery stores
- Auto repair centers
- Real estate agents
- Home service companies (lawn care, pressure washing, hvac, etc.)
These businesses benefit from geographic exposure and don’t require tight demographic filtering.
Businesses selling higher-ticket products or services, however, often perform better with targeted lists, where income, home value, or buyer behavior can be controlled. Mailing to “everyone” can lead to unnecessary waste.
EDDM or Saturation: The Right Tool for the Job
EDDM is a solid entry-level option. It’s fast, visible, and affordable, especially if you’re just getting started.
Saturation mailing becomes the better choice when:
- You’re mailing in large quantities
- You want lower labor costs
- You need more control over who receives your mail
- You’re working with a bulk mail house
Both programs can work. The key is matching the method to your goals, budget, and volume.
Direct mail is still one of the most effective forms of advertising when done correctly. When it doesn’t work, it’s almost always due to one of three things:
- The wrong audience
- A weak or unclear message
- Poor tracking
