SEO Isn’t What It Used to Be – Now What?
Mark Hale ‐ March 17, 2025
For years, SEO was the golden ticket to getting traffic and leads. The formula was simple: rank high on Google, get visitors, and turn them into paying customers.
But things have changed—a lot.
Google isn’t just looking at keywords and backlinks anymore. They’ve shifted gears—big time—prioritizing content quality, local engagement, and user experience. If SEO is still your only strategy, you might be in for a wake-up call.
1. Google Cares More About Quality Than Keywords
Remember when stuffing your site with keywords and optimizing every tiny detail was enough to land you at the top? Yeah, not anymore.
Google’s algorithm updates—especially the Helpful Content Update—now reward content that actually helps users, not just content that’s technically “SEO-friendly.”
Here’s what’s happening:
- AI-generated fluff? Penalized.
- Clickbait that overpromises and underdelivers? Losing rankings fast.
- Content written just for Google instead of real people? Ignored.
Google’s new focus is expertise, authority, and trustworthiness. If your content doesn’t genuinely help people, it doesn’t matter how well you optimize it—you’re not going to rank.
2. Local Engagement & Customer Reviews Are a Big Deal
Google isn’t just ranking websites anymore—it’s ranking real-world engagement. That means local search and user-generated content (like reviews) are more important than ever.
Here’s what Google loves:
- Google Reviews – Businesses with frequent, high-quality reviews rank better.
- Customer-Generated Content – Photos, Q&As, and feedback boost credibility.
- Authentic Engagement – Replying to reviews, answering customer questions, and staying active online.
How to Get More Google Reviews (And Why You Can’t Wait for Them to Just Happen)
Let’s be real—most customers aren’t going to leave reviews on their own. Even if they had a great experience, they’ll forget, get distracted, or just move on with their day. You have to ask—and then ask again.
The most effective strategy we’ve used? Sending out a short email asking for our clients to leave us a quick review. This simple move took our Google reviews from 20 to 125 in about a year and a half.
Here’s what we’ve found that works best:
- Send an email directly asking for a review. Keep it short, personal, and easy.
- Include a direct link to your Google review page (don’t make them search for it).
- Follow up—politely remind them if they didn’t leave a review the first time.
- Make it even easier with a QR code. If you’re in a service-based industry, hand out Google Review Business Card with a QR code linking directly to your review page on Google. Customers can scan, click, and leave a review in seconds.
This isn’t a one-and-done thing—it’s a process. Keep asking, make it effortless, and your reviews will stack up.
And trust me—more reviews will help you rank higher, stand out from competitors, and build trust with potential customers.
3. Zero-Click Searches & AI Are Changing the Game
Google is answering people’s questions before they even click on a website. That means even if you rank #1, you might not get the traffic you used to.
- Featured Snippets give users direct answers at the top of search results.
- People Also Ask boxes provide extra info without them leaving Google.
- AI-generated summaries (like Google’s Search Generative Experience) are reshaping how content is consumed.
What does this mean for you? You can’t just rely on SEO anymore—you need to own your audience. Email lists, social media, podcasts, and other platforms are where smart businesses are focusing their energy.
4. Google Prefers Brands, Not Just Websites
Google isn’t just ranking websites anymore—it’s ranking businesses.
A simple website with solid SEO won’t outrank:
- A business with a strong brand presence.
- A company with social media engagement and an active community.
- A brand that gets press mentions and quality backlinks.
Bottom line? Your reputation is part of your ranking. If you’re not actively building credibility, you’re going to struggle.
5. A Multi-Channel Marketing Strategy is No Longer Optional
If SEO is your only strategy, you’re taking a huge risk. Google’s algorithms change constantly, and one update could send your rankings (and traffic) plummeting overnight.
What’s working in 2025? Diversification.
- Social Media Marketing – Build an engaged community on Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and Twitter.
- Email Marketing – Own your audience. Google can’t take away your email list.
- Content Marketing – Blogs, videos, case studies—create things people actually want to engage with.
- Paid Advertising – Google Ads and social ads give you targeted traffic instead of just hoping for rankings.
- Direct Mail Marketing – Reach your ideal audience right in their mailbox—no spam filters, just targeted, tangible marketing that gets noticed.
Successful businesses aren’t just ranking on Google—they’re visible everywhere.
SEO Alone Won’t Cut It—Time to Think Bigger
SEO still matters, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
Google has moved on, and if you want to stay ahead, you need to adapt. The businesses winning today are the ones who are:
- Creating high-quality, engaging content
- Building real brand authority and trust
- Leveraging local and customer-generated reviews
- Using a multi-channel marketing approach
If you’re still only focusing on SEO, it’s time to rethink your strategy. The future belongs to brands that create real value, build trust, and connect with their audience on multiple platforms.
Google moved on. It’s time for you to do the same.
