3 Direct Mail Mistakes That Kill Your Response Rates

‐ October 15, 2021

There are only three reasons why a direct mail piece fails to generate a response for your business:

  1. The piece was mailed to the wrong prospect for the product or service (i.e., you have an old, bad, or incorrectly targeted mailing list).
  2. The piece that was mailed did not effectively communicate to the reader.
  3. No follow-up or consistency in mailing.

Unlike other methods of advertising—where the reasons for failure are often unclear—direct mail marketing is different. The fix is usually simple. All three of the above issues are within your control to address.

Direct mail is the only form of advertising that consistently reaches your best prospective new customers. If your mailing list is solid, you can rule that out as the problem. The next thing to check is the design and message of your mailer. We know the United States Postal Service delivers the mail every day. We know people pick it up from their mailbox and look through it. What happens, or doesn’t happen, after they see your piece comes down to communication.

Checklist for Troubleshooting Communication Issues in a Direct Mail Piece

  • Did you try to advertise more than one service or product? Cramming multiple offers into one piece can confuse the reader. People have short attention spans and won’t read a lot of copy.
  • Did your mailer have too much text? Use photos and graphics to break up the copy. No one wants to read a wall of text.
  • Did you promote the benefits of owning the product or using the service?
  • Did you have a headline that clearly stated the main benefit?
  • Did you give the reader a reason to buy now? Offer a special deal or something with perceived value that encourages immediate action.
  • Was your special offer competitive with what others in your market are offering?
  • Was your call to action clear and obvious? Phone numbers should be in large, bold font. Email addresses and website links should be easy to find.
  • Did you give an expiration date for your offer?
  • Did you avoid industry jargon that the average person wouldn’t understand?
  • Was the piece easy to read?
  • Could someone understand what it’s about in two seconds or less?

Direct mail marketing is simple, but failure to communicate is one of the biggest reasons you won’t get a response.

The Often Overlooked Key: Consistency

A single mailing is rarely enough. Even with the perfect list and a great design, most people won’t respond the first time they see your offer. In fact, marketing studies show that it can take 7–9 touches before someone feels ready to take action.

Life gets in the way—your potential customer might set your postcard aside, intending to respond later, only for it to get buried under a stack of mail. Or they may be interested but not quite ready to buy yet. When they see your message again, it jogs their memory, builds familiarity, and increases trust.

Consistency also builds brand recognition. The more often people see your name, your logo, and your message, the more likely they are to remember you when they’re ready to make a purchase. That’s why mailing to the same audience multiple times—over weeks or months—almost always produces better results than one big blast.

Think of it like planting seeds. One watering won’t make them grow; they need consistent care over time. Your marketing works the same way.

You Might Have Gotten a Response Without Knowing It

You might be thinking, “Wait! That doesn’t make sense. How could I have gotten a response without knowing it?”

Today, people respond to advertising in one of three ways:

  1. They call you.
  2. They walk into your store.
  3. They visit your website to check out you and your company.

In fact, 98% of people interested in your offer will visit your website long before they call or make a purchase. If your website is outdated or not designed to convert leads, you’re losing business. A well-designed, conversion-focused website is essential to your success.
